Washington, DC (November 20, 2019) – Today, former Vice President Al Gore and Climate Reality Leaders will deliver over 1,600 presentations in communities around the world for 24 Hours of Reality: Truth in Action, a grassroots day of action and education to catalyze a global conversation about the climate crisis and its solutions.
On November 20-21, members of The Climate Reality Project’s network of Climate Reality Leaders will deliver updated and personalized versions of the presentation made famous by the Academy Award-winning documentary, An Inconvenient Truth. Climate Reality Leaders participating in 24 Hours of Reality: Truth in Action will bring the hopeful message about today’s climate solutions directly to their friends, family, colleagues, neighbors, and strangers through informative, engaging presentations that emphasize the local challenges the climate crisis poses to their cities, towns, and communities.
Presenters have organized more than 1,600 individual events in all 50 U.S. states and Puerto Rico, and in 77 countries and Antarctica. Presenters range in age from 13 to 87 and represent a wide diversity of ethnicities, occupations, gender identities, religious traditions, and backgrounds.
24 Hours of Reality events will take place at major international corporations, hospitals, universities, city halls, the Bronx Zoo, a Broadway theater, and the forests of Kuala Lumpur, reaching a collective audience of more than 60,000. In his hometown of Nashville, Tennessee, Vice President Gore will address students and members of the public in a presentation hosted at Vanderbilt University.
“Over the last year, we’ve seen that the power of grassroots organizing has mobilized citizens of all ages, backgrounds, and beliefs to take to the streets and demand climate action from our leaders,” said Al Gore. “That’s in part thanks to the work of Climate Reality Leaders, who work on the ground to engage their communities face-to-face and spread the hopeful message of climate solutions. I’m thrilled that this year’s 24 Hours of Reality: Truth in Action is placing a spotlight on those who speak truth to power every day, and who are behind the growing momentum for action on the climate crisis.”
24 Hours of Reality: Truth in Action marks an exciting evolution in The Climate Reality Project’s 24 Hours of Reality program. Since 2011, Climate Reality has produced the award-winning 24 Hours of Reality broadcast to sound the alarm on the climate crisis and spotlight the solutions to solve it. Reaching nearly 800 million households, previous broadcasts have explored different sides of both the crisis and the movement for solutions. Last year’s broadcast, 24 Hours of Reality: Protect Our Planet, Protect Ourselves, called attention to the climate crisis’s impact on global health.
This year, 24 Hours of Reality is stepping off the screen and directly into town squares, living rooms, schools, places of worship, community centers, and other venues around the globe as trained Climate Reality Leaders give presentations about local climate solutions in direct interactions with their communities.
After completing the Climate Reality Leadership Corps training program, which provides attendees with practical skills needed to effectively communicate about the climate crisis and its solutions, Climate Reality Leaders work to build greater support within their communities for climate action and the transition to a clean energy economy.
Outside of hosting educational presentations and events, Climate Reality Leaders have been a force behind impactful climate action efforts for the past decade. Climate Reality Leaders have organized global climate strikes attended by hundreds of thousands around the world, successfully advocated for climate and clean energy policies, and helped cities, towns, businesses, and universities begin the transition to 100% clean electricity.
The Climate Reality Project is working with One Tree Planted to plant a tree on behalf of 24 Hours of Reality: Truth in Action presentation attendees. One Tree Planted is a nonprofit environmental organization working on reforestation projects in North America, Latin America, Africa, and Asia. Trees planted through these projects rebuild wildlife habitat, restore land, create jobs, sequester carbon, and more.
